CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
- Develop, review and support resin manufacturing sites on process safety initiatives:
- Review compliance and risk status an assigned group of PSM / resin production facilities. Support these sites through the following activities:
- Process Hazard Analyses
- Process Safety Management Audits
- Self-Assessments from Monomer, Peroxides, and Flammable storage standards
- Third party resin production safety reviews
- Work with sites to execute a multi-year capital allocation and for resin sites.
- Manage and oversee a resin scorecard and report out for sites to share execution of funding and improvements plans.
- Partner with the resin Community of Practice to communicate and share best practices across the sites.
- Lead and facilitate PHAs with assigned sites. Use the events to teach and coach others to become competent PHA facilitators.
- Work with assigned sites to advance through the PSM scorecard to achieve a level 2 or higher in all elements.
- Support sites to advance and execute projects. Hold recurring meetings with sites on status of execution and completion of PSM action plans and projects.
- Risk Analysis, Prevention & Investigations:
- Manage resin risk assessment and related action plans for assigned sites. Work with EHS site leaders to ensure action are on tactical plans and included in the CapEx budget.
- Work with resin sites to prioritize and risk rank action plans and hold routine closure status calls.
- Participate in post event / incident investigations with site and regional teams. Support teams in the root cause analysis and the determination of appropriate controls to prevent recurrence.
- Training & Support:
- Develop resin training and resources to build technical and EHS competence across all resin sites from reactor operators to leadership.
- Build competence and awareness through technical talks and Setting the Tones.
- Facilitate communication and training on resin operations through the Community of Practice.
- Compliance / Legal:
- Participate in or lead select PSM audits for resin sites.
- Participate or lead select Process Hazard Analyses for resin sites.
- Work with resin site PMs, EHS managers and regional EHS directors on compliance issues at resin locations.
FORMAL EDUCATION:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in a physical science or Engineering
- Bachelor’s degree in a Chemical Engineering
- Master’s level degree in a physical science or Engineering
- Professional Engineer (P.E.), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Six Sigma, Human Factors Engineering
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
Required:
- 3+ years of experience with polymers, resin, reactive chemistry for paint and coatings
- 5+ years of prior experience in PSM regulated facilities, or the chemical or coatings industry.
- Experience with batch processing, chemical process safety, process hazard analyses and methods (What-If, HAZOP, Checklist), environmental capture and control systems, process and behavioral accident/incident investigation, PSM/RMP auditing, EHS Management Systems
- Experience with Process Hazard Analysis (chemistry based and processing based)
- Previous implementation experience with risk reduction through design and controls
- Knowledge of general safety engineering
- Experience and comfort level around interacting with and engaging senior level employees.
- Ability to handle potential stressful situations including investigations of accidents involving injury or death, investigations of fires and/or explosions, governmental investigations and inquiries.
Preferred:
- International experience and knowledge of global standards including process safety, fire protection and life safety, and safety engineering and hazards.
TECHNICAL/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Required:
- PHA facilitation
- Project engineering support and project execution
- Experience in operations in resin / reactive chemistry manufacturing.
