General Summary of PositionThe MedStar National Rehabilitation Network student nurse internship program is an intensive, paid summer internship program designed to enhance your academic experience as an undergraduate Baccalaureate Nursing Student. Positions are offered in each specialty unit, depending on availability. Throughout the summer, Student Nurse Interns will participate in Educational Sessions, and other focused experiences. The program is an exceptional opportunity for student nurses to strengthen their nursing skills, build confidence and gain exposure to different nursing specialties in an acute inpatient rehabilitation setting. Admission to MNRN's Summer Nurse Internship program is highly selective and competitive. Candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited BSN program with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (outof 4.0) and have completed the Med/Surg Clinical rotation in a hospital setting. The incumbent should also be available for full-time employment and rotating shifts (weekend/ nights/ holidays included).
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Monitors and reports observations/changes in patient status (i.e. vital signs, temperature, pulse oximeter readings, weight, etc.) and records them in the electronic health record. As appropriate reports observations and changes to the appropriate nursing and medical personnel in accordance to the specific Nursing Division protocol.
Performs hourly rounding to assess pain, potty and positioning needs for patients.
Assists patient with activities of daily living (ADL's), including but not limited to: positioning/escorting, answering patient call lights, feeding, bathing, etc.
Maintains the cleanliness and safety of patient rooms/environment by distributing and changing linen/towels, removing used meal trays, checking bed side rails, and safety restraints. Notifies appropriate personnel as needed when these issues cannot be immediately resolved.
Transports and/or escorts patients during discharges, transfers, and/or medical appointments. Completes errands such as delivering specimens to the laboratory, etc., as required.
Initiates CPR when indicated and appropriate.
Provides constant care attendant functions if indicated by the RN, Nurse Supervisor, and/or any other member of Nursing leadership
Minimum Qualifications Education
- Enrollment in an accredited Baccalaureate School of Nursing required
Experience
- Completion of at least one semester of clinical experience required
Licenses and Certifications
- CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
- Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to perform nursing technologies and provide direct nursing care to patients.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrate strong ability to set priorities, multitask, and collaborate with team members.
This position has a hiring range of $20.12 - $20.12
