MedStar Health is looking for a Surgical Technologist OR Permanent Call to join our team!
The Surgical Technologist OR Permanent Call is responsible for the scrub duties in simple to complex surgical interventions, including assessment of instruments, equipment, and supply needs of each case assigned. Responsible for ensuring that the plan of care developed with the team is implemented according to defined performance standards to ensure positive patient outcomes. The ST provides a safe patient environment.
Requirements as a permanent on-call position:
3 weeks onsite onboarding.
2 onsite 8-hour shifts per 6-week schedule.
Response time of 60 minutes from being called in.
Available for 60 hours of on-call job responsibilities per week.
2 winter and 1 summer holiday on a rotating basis, alternating years with 1 winter and 2 summer holidays

Primary Duties:
Responsible for performing scrub duties in simple to complex surgical interventions, assessing and or assembling the instrument, equipment, and supply needs of each case assigned, ensuring that the plan of care developed with the team is implemented according to defined performance standards to ensure positive patient outcomes, and for providing a safe patient environment and accepts responsibility to assist in on-the-job training of new team members upon request.
Assembles the necessary instruments, supplies and equipment, checking items to assure they are in working condition. Applies and monitors the principles of aseptic technique throughout the peri-operative phase. Performs intra-operative sponge and needle counts according to policy and procedure.
Ensures patient safety during electrical equipment use. Correctly collects and accurately labels specimens. Applies principles of proper body alignment during the transfer and positioning of patients.
Ensures and respects the patient’s right to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality. Assures the Environment of Care is maintained according to regulatory guidelines. Labels and reports malfunctioning equipment to appropriate persons.
Participates in the evaluation of new supplies, equipment and or instrumentation. Functions in a permanent on-call position.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED.
Completion of Formal Surgical Tech Training Program.
2 years multispecialty operating room experience.
CPR (Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation) (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days.
CST - Certified Surgical Technologist or National Center for Competency Testing preferred.
Associate’s degree in Surgical Technology preferred.
