We are seeking a driven, qualified, and motivated Environmental Manager with land use experience to join our Southeast Region team. This position is based out of our Atlanta (Duluth), GA office. You will provide strategic and tactical leadership and advice to our business leaders in sustainability, environmental, and land use permitting and compliance while working collaboratively with operations, land, and environmental staff. This position reports to the Region Director for Land, Environment & Sustainability.
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO
This position ensures sustainability leadership and compliance with all environmental laws, regulations, and permits applicable to the Heidelberg Materials operations (aggregates mining, ready-mix concrete, concrete recycling, cement terminals) in the Southeast Region (AL, GA, NC, SC & FL). This position works closely with Land Managers and Business Management on strategic land acquisitions and land use permitting for green sites and existing operations. This is achieved by identifying requirements to be performed by Heidelberg Materials and developing strategies to meet these requirements. The strategy will utilize available human, technical, and physical resources, both internal and external, to fully accomplish these requirements. Success in this critical role is building and sustaining a culture of sustainable resource development as a core value within all activities.
- Ensure compliance with all environmental regulations, company policies, and procedures and effectively communicate applicable requirements to operations personnel.
- Lead the Heidelberg Materials Corporate Sustainability Program implementation in the Southeast Region.
- Manage environmental and land use consultants performing work for Heidelberg Materials facilities.
- Review current and proposed permits, laws, and regulations to analyze their impacts on the assigned Heidelberg Materials facilities and effectively communicate those impacts to management.
- Collaborate and lead strategic land acquisitions and land use permitting for green sites and existing operations across the Southeast Region.
- Prepare and submit documents such as environmental permit applications, plans, and reports by the required due dates, enabling the continued operation of Heidelberg Materials facilities.
- Assist in planning and permitting changes in physical facilities to meet environmental and land use requirements.
- Assist in implementing policies and procedures to ensure practices comply with the applicable environmental and land use permits, laws, and regulations.
- Investigate and facilitate the resolution of compliance issues, questions, or complaints received from within the company, customers, government regulatory agencies, and/or the public.
- Proactively evaluate Heidelberg Materials' environmental compliance at assigned facilities and effectively communicate and implement sustainable compliance strategies.
- Assist in due diligence investigations.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- Bachelor's degree in a related environmental, geology, or engineering discipline. Master's degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of environmental and land use permitting experience in the mining, environmental consulting, or heavy industry
- Experience leading, mentoring, and training direct reports to ensure their development and ongoing success.
- Land use permitting, zoning, stakeholder engagement, community relations, and other public-facing experience is a definite plus.
- Ability to effectively oversee environmental permit and land use applications and reports for submittal to external parties, including regulatory agencies
- Ability to collaboratively develop and implement effective environmental and land use compliance strategies and management systems, including management plans
- Ability to understand, evaluate, interpret, and explain multiple complex inputs and provide clear communication with internal and external parties in a collaborative, positive manner, representing Heidelberg Materials' interests
- Experience and demonstrated ability managing a multi-media environmental program, including air, process water, and stormwater quality, bulk petroleum storage, hazardous waste, and materials, corps of engineers permits, mining reclamation, and others.
- Willingness to travel regularly within the Southeast Region.
- Competence with computing software, including Microsoft Office, EMIS systems, AutoCAD/ArcGIS, etc.
- Must have and maintain a Driver's License valid in the state(s) of the assigned facilities
- Professional Engineer (P.E.), Professional Geologist (P.G), or other nationally recognized certification is a definite plus.
Work Environment
- Role operates in both a professional office environment as well as conducting business at manufacturing locations and job sites where the conditions include moving mechanical equipment, inclement weather, heat, humidity, elevated noise levels, and walking on uneven surfaces.
