We seek a candidate who can help translate the vision of building a more intelligent network into software solutions and capabilities that will help us achieve on that goal. This role will require partnering with boundary teams to deliver solutions used by field support teams, the network operation center, and other partner teams. The role will also support the internal team to automate and streamline lab testing.The ideal candidate should have deep knowledge and experience working with large IP/MPLS networks and technologies from major vendors such as Nokia, Juniper, or Cisco. The candidate should also possess solid software development and Linux system administration skills. The candidate should be proficient in common programming languages (Python, Go, C/C++, Ruby, PHP, Perl, etc.) along with hands-on experience with DevOps tools Ansible, Kubernetes, YAML, and GIT.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as overall subject matter expert on network platforms and applications supporting Metro Ethernet network and advanced networking services (L3VPN, VPLS, Internet, Ethernet Private Line services, QoS, etc.).
- Collaborate with internal team members to discover, design, and develop capabilities that are required for the future-state network. These capabilities include segment routing, streaming telemetry, advanced OAM, and network observability functions.
- Leverage expertise in engineering and operations to bring innovative and creative ideas for new automation and observability capabilities.
- Assist application developers to deliver new initiatives for service provisioning, network health, and performance monitoring.
- Identify opportunities for improvements to existing designs & practices on an ongoing basis, drawing on new platform capabilities, industry standards, market demands, etc. Define the business impact and value of these improvements, publicize priorities, and align resources needed to perform proof of concept testing and introduction into Cox's commercial services network operations for these design improvements.
- Effective written and verbal interpersonal communication skills. Experienced at writing technical proposals and documentation. Typical formal documentation outputs will include test plans, project business/technical requirements, test results and key findings, standardized design guidelines, and implementation guides. Informal communication skills (e-mail, teleconference, face to face, etc.) are also required.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in a related discipline and 4 years' experience in a related field. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as a master's degree and 2 years' experience; a Ph.D. and up to 1 year of experience; or 8 years' experience in a related field
- Direct network design engineering experience. This should include strong familiarity with building foundational network designs, including:
- Designing IGP protocol stacks (OSPF, IS-IS)
- Strong experience with BGP (eBGP, iBGP, and multi-protocol BGP)
- Designing MPLS solutions including experience with RSVP-TE and FRR
- Developing robust network resiliency designs
- Application, tools, or scripting development experience. Development in direct support of large networks is highly desired.
- Experience leading large, complex projects that span boundary teams, have many stakeholders, and require managing a variety of resources.
- Software development stack experience:
- Programming languages: Go, Python, Typescript
- UI Framework: Vue
- Automation & DevOps: Ansible, AWX, Kubernetes, Argo Workflows, ArgoCD, Jinja, YAML, SNMP, gNMI, and git
Preferred Requirements:
- Experience with Nokia service router platforms (7x50, 7250, 7210, 7705, etc)
- Telecommunications industry certifications (Cisco, Juniper, or Nokia)
