The Opportunity

This position works out of our Scarborough, Maine, location in the Rapid Diagnostics Infectious Diseases Division.

What You’ll Work On

Provides strategic direction and manages staff to ensure compliance with associated regulatory requirements including, but not limited to; OSHA, EPA, DOT, IATA, DHS, MPCA and IFC.  Responsible for creating a healthy, safe environment in accordance with Abbott's recognized standards.  Interfaces regularly with internal and external customers with regard to compliance, site inspections and regulatory requirements.  Supports claim litigation management, disability management, rehabilitation management and medical management for Abbott employees.

• Develop, direct and manage compliance initiatives and develop strategies to prevent and minimize employee injury, educate management and employees and increase awareness to achieve sustainable behavioral changes to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.
• Direct and manage relationships with external regulatory agencies
• Develop and implement processes to deliver results in accordance with Abbott's Safety and Environmental policies.
• Ensure the control of occupational health and safety risks and the affectivity of the established monitoring methods.
• Increase the visibility to functional group interdependencies and their interactions with the EHS department.
• Lead the development of a health, safety management system including organizational structure, planning activities, responsibilities and procedures.
• Responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the system in accordance with recognized standards (e.g. ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001).
• Support Abbott's worker’s compensation program by working with affected individuals and departments in compliance with Department of Labor regulations and work comp insurer policies and procedures.
• Lead the development of the EMS and overall environmental policy and program improvement. Establish targets and objectives related to EHS in order to meet corporate objectives. Set and effectively communicate environmental health and safety targets and objectives within Abbott.
• Support division ISO 14001 program development, implementation and registration.
• Establish, implement, and oversee EMS (including documentation).
• Report to senior management on environmental performance and make recommendations for improvement. Communicate EMS expectations. Provide input and serve as the EMPS representative for Management Reviews.
• Serve as environmental audit point of contact for internal and external auditors. Assist with CAPA closure and determining root cause and corrective action effectiveness.
• Review operations for other compliance activities, issues, programs. Manages/oversees day to day environmental activities to insure compliance.
• Maintain a thorough knowledge of Federal, State and local regulatory requirements that impact Abbott operations.
• Develop EHS databases for managing environmental health and safety target initiatives. Effectively manage the EHS budget.
• Support initiatives as identified by Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
• Hires and retains a diverse, highly qualified staff and provides ongoing performance feedback. Sets goals which align to department plans and manages the execution of goals through coaching and mentoring. Maintains a safe and professional work environment.
• Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.  Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

Required Qualifications

• Master's Degree (± 18 years) In Occupational Health and Safety or related field or an equivalent combination of education and work experience

• Minimum 10 years in the Health and Safety field with both hands on and program management experience.

• Ability to navigate and interpret OSHA regulations, fire codes and applicable regulations.

• Work independently and drive complex projects to completion.

• In-depth technical skills necessary to perform traditional EHS duties.

• Ability to successfully manage multiple projects.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

• Ability to discern and appropriately communicate sensitive issues.

• Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross division business unit model preferred.

• Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.

• Ability to travel.

The base pay for this position is $125,300.00 – $250,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
