The Opportunity
Abbott's Data Science & Engineering organization accelerates data-driven solutions and creates business value across the organization related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital Analytics, and Big Data. We use state-of-the-art technologies, build cutting-edge algorithms that solve complex health challenges, and develop reliable, cost-effective tools.
Our location in Chicago currently has an opportunity to join the Data Science & Engineering team and lead solution architecture that develops and manages tools used by thousands of users. The candidate will be responsible for engineering designs, portfolio management, planning, and execution of analytics solutions delivery to support Abbott's mission.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Primary Function
- Provide technical leadership and oversight in analytical solutions development as related to data engineering initiatives and AI cloud infrastructure
- Develop strategies and roadmaps in cloud and big data that foster innovation in AI and cloud computing
- Lead a team focused on data and insights to solve cutting-edge opportunities, drive superior customer experience, and transform our business
Core Job Responsibilities
- Collaborate with technology leaders, business partners and peer groups regarding long and short-range AI cloud and big data goals
- Recommend and drive innovative solutions as it pertains to data engineering, which anticipates the future direction of the business, its drivers and solution strategy
- Drive the globalization of capabilities for the organization that determines redundancy and re-engineering opportunities
Technology Delivery Oversight
- Work closely with business & function partners to determine how information solutions can be leveraged to support business strategies, capabilities, and processes
- Lead architecture team to develop Information management solutions using AWS and/or Azure services such Cloud compute, Data Pipeline, File storage & Database Service.
- Architect and design analytical solutions by using and applying appropriate methodology – including, but not limited to machine learning, natural language processing, image processing, simulation, forecasting, scenario analysis, and mathematical programming
- Implement and maintain compliance and controls for all relevant regulations (FDA, SOX, CFR, GDPR, HIPAA) and policies that apply to healthcare
- Develop, execute and manage big data projects within the defined scope. Expedite, manage and coordinate a multitude of interrelated project activities within the constraints of human and financial resources and changing priorities to ensure the successful completion of projects.
- Manage communication and negotiation with supplier and partners to obtain required solution design, sizing, and cost optimization
- Coordinate resources to ensure project needs are addressed and effectively assign tasks and deliverables to team members based upon their abilities.
- Constantly improve system performance and reliability through better tools, process, and monitoring systems
- Drive the adoption of new technology and methods through evaluation and feasibility research
- Supervises, motivates and mentors cross-functional /cross divisional project team of project managers, data engineers, developers, and validation analysts.
- Serve as liaison between various business and IT teams
- Ensure compliance to Abbott quality and regulatory policies and procedures
- Partner with Product Owners to align the roadmap with the technical design and strategy.
- Review and ensure application designs are consistent, maintainable, flexible and cost -effective solutions
- Ensure effective systems operations between the suppliers and Abbott Plan/Build organization
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING
Minium Required Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in the field of computer science, engineering, or equivalent relevant experience/ Master’s Degree preferred
- 10-15+ years of application development experience in data engineering, big data platforms, AI cloud, and/or digital products.
- Expertise in Big Data Engineering, Delivery Management in the Analytics domain, data warehousing solutions, and Data application development
- Proven capability in identifying value with new and emerging technologies. Experience with cloud and big data implementation projects on Azure and/or AWS
- Strong customer centric approach with outstanding leadership and organizational skills
- Ability to communicate complex quantitative analysis in a clear, precise, actionable manner
- Excellent vendor management skills
- Ability to prioritize and triage deadline-driven tasks in a high-pressure environment
- Ability to manage 3-4 direct reports as well as external partner resources
- Ability to dive into solution design and engineering (Hands-On skills)
- Experience working in an FDA-regulated business (e.g. validated software related to medical, pharmaceutical, or life sciences products) is preferred.

The base pay for this position is $125,300.00 – $250,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
