Assist surgeon, performs operative/invasive procedures. Mentoring, and utilizing the additional education gained through certification will be used to assist peers, perform more efficiently and raise performance. Reports to the Nurse Manager and according to department policies, nursing care standards and professional licensure; as a member of the interdisciplinary team, contributes professional nursing knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients through the nursing process.
- Preparation for surgeon specific operative/invasive procedures that's timely, accurate effective and efficient. Promotes the use of evidence-based practice through the nursing process, protocols, and procedures.
- Utilizes skills and expertise to serve as a partner with nurse and physician to augment patient care, patient flow and physician productivity.
- Sets up sterile field and is scrubbed prior to patent entering the room.
- Sets up case so that another can step into an organized back table and mayo.
- Set up time for a variety of case types is within acceptable range.
- Aware of and is prepared for case needs, i.e., two mayo's.
- Collaborates with surgeon prior to case and adjusts as necessary.
- Performs indirect patient care. Scrubs simple to complex procedures for a variety of specialties.
- Maintains adequate daily stock of sterile instruments, clinical supplies, forms, meds, and educational materials in exam rooms and nursing area.
- Accurately and thoroughly completes lab requisitions and labeling of specimens. Properly packages specimens and assures transfer to lab in a timely fashion.
- Able to "run mayo" independently.
- Is prepared for sequencing, i.e., clamp, cut, tie.
- Performs in first scrub, first assist and second scrub roles.
- Performs case closing activities such as dressing application, transfer, and turnover.
- Anticipates and provides appropriate and timely intervention for intra-op case change. E.g., lap to open, uncontrolled bleeding, perforation.
- Precept/Mentor staff and students in planning for surgical events.
