Job Summary The lead medical laboratory scientist is responsible for pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing. Follows standard operating procedures and ensures laboratory safety, quality and regulatory requirements are met. Responsible for ensuring a laboratory section meets accreditation requirements. This position will focus on supporting Pre-analytic areas, such as specimen collection, processing, and send outs, as well as Point of Care testing within the hospital. This position will also be required to maintain bench competencies and cover weekends. Collects laboratory specimens, as needed. Processes lab specimens and performs clinical laboratory testing, including manual and automated methods, in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures. Demonstrates skill in use of equipment relevant to position. Demonstrates critical and independent judgement in decision-making and problem solving. Demonstrates personal commitment to the principles, values, and ethics of the organization to promote a positive work environment by encouraging the same ideals in peers. Seeks personal learning opportunities and provides learning opportunities to other staff. Recognizes safety hazards and complies with all safety practices and protocols. Assists in the training and competency assessment of staff. Serves as a laboratory resource to other health care personnel and collaborates with other departments across the enterprise. Serves as the region representative in an enterprise workgroup. Participates in validations, proficiency testing and evaluation and quality assurance initiatives. Leads quality improvement initiatives within section. Provides feedback for performance appraisals. Performs other related duties as assigned. May be required to travel to other locations.
Qualifications Bachelor's degree in laboratory or biological sciences required. Must have knowledge of laboratory equipment, procedures, CLIA regulations, and quality control methods. Two years of laboratory related experience preferred. Must possess a national certification for Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) through an approved Health and Human Services (HHS) agency, for example, American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or be registry-eligible. Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) is also acceptable. Registry-eligible candidates must successfully complete the Board of Registry examination within 12 months of employment. If working in North Dakota (ND), must be licensed by the ND Board of Clinical Laboratory Practice. Maintain continuing education credits equivalent to the state requirements as needed for license and certifications. May be required to have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
