- Knowledge, skill and the ability to utilize Safe Lift Equipment: Viking, Sabina, Ergoslide, Hoyer lifts, and Golvo. Gaitbelts, vital signs machine, and weighing scales. In telemetry units telemetry monitors and screens.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Under the supervision and/or with assistance, assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document the daily care of assigned patients.
- Supervision of the Certified Nursing Assistant and Nurse Technician under the direction of the RN.
- Practice safe medication administration to patients orally, intra-muscularly, or subcutaneously. May not administer IV push medications and vasoactive IV piggyback medication.
- Monitor effects of medications and observes patient response; knowledgeable regarding actions and side effects.
- Under direct supervision of a registered nurse, the LPN may: Observe and monitor the patient during blood transfusion. Monitor infusion of blood and blood products to a peripheral or central venous access line.
- Perform routine IV functions based on the Maryland Nurse Practice Act.
- The LPN may not: Discontinue a central line Initiate or manage PCA pumps Flush or access implantable ports Hang blood
- Assist RN in obtaining admission data, excluding initial patient assessment. Plan of care is updated to reflect current patient status after the RN initiates.
- Complete divisional and unit-specific competencies as required.
- Participate in continuing education classes and in-services.
- Function as a team member to organize and prioritize responsibilities to complete daily work requirements.
- Communicate and provide basic health care teachings/instructions to patients and family members.
- Responsible in delegating tasks to unlicensed personnel.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
