Position Summary:
Performs routine patient care procedures as determined by the plan of care and directed by the Registered Nurse. Essential Functions:
- In a team relationship with the RN, performs duties to support the daily care of the patient.
- Provides care and assists patients in performing activities of daily living.
- Based on patient's plan of care, performs technical skills including initiation of IV's and discontinuation, medLock, phlebotomy, EKG's, postural drainage, insertion, irrigation, maintenance and removal of urinary catheters, decubitus care for Stage I and Stage II ulcers and dressing changes.
- Assists in preparation for new admission, transfer and discharge of patient as directed by RN.
- Assists in reinforcing patient/family education as directed by the Registered Nurse.
- Provides turning and positioning using proper body mechanics and lifting devices, as indicated by patient condition.
- Performs routine treatment procedures within the scope of practice.
- Takes temperature, pulse, respirations, weight, height and blood pressure per protocol accurately and in a timely manner.
- Prepares patient with meal selection, feeding, tray set up and positioning to eat.
- Answers call lights in a timely manner. Anticipates patient needs. Makes rounds of assigned patients based on unit schedule.
- Assists with handling and care of clothing and other personal property (glasses, dentures, contact lenses, hearing aids, prosthetic devices, etc.)
- Collects and transports specimens according to procedure.
- Performs ROM, ambulation and wheelchair mobility.
- Assembles or collects appropriate sterile or non-sterile equipment/supplies in preparation for testing or treatment procedures performed by professional staff.
- Performs duties and responsibilities for patients in isolation according to established departmental procedures.
- With the RN, gathers data relevant to the individual needs of the patient and/or family and immediately reports to the Registered Nurse.
- Alerts nurse of abnormal findings or changes in patient's baseline condition immediately, including refusal of any procedure or task.
- Observes patient's condition, recognizes implications or abnormal baseline diagnostic results and reports to the RN
Level of Supervision
- Required: Works under constant supervision
Qualifications/Requirements
This program is RN students, rising seniors and current seniors.
Education/Knowledge:
- Experience: Less than one year
- Education Discipline: Nursing student enrolled in a BSN Nursing Program. Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
- CNA certificate required
- American Heart Association CPR Certification
- Enrollment in an accredited BSN Nursing Program
- Have to be able to commit to 36 hour work week day or night, plus 4 hours of class once a week, usually in the mornings.
