Description The Applied Science Division of the Leidos Innovation Center (LInC) is seeking a talented individual to serve as Robotics & Controls Chief Engineer for our Guidance, Navigation, Control, and Autonomy Branch. Working closely with our Huntsville-based leadership team, you will help our customers solve some of their most challenging problems in maritime, air, ground, and space systems by developing unique integrated solutions that combine hardware and embedded software on mobile platforms. You will do so by proposing and guiding the execution of novel engineering projects that sit at the intersection of Robotics, Controls, and Autonomy for a wide range of platforms for military and civil use, both domestically and with allied partners. You will also work closely with counterparts in other Leidos Sectors and industry partners to develop larger, combined solutions that support Corporate and Sector strategic goals. With offices across the United States engaging in the defense, civil, cyber and commercial fields, Leidos provides responsive, cost-effective engineering, scientific and IT solutions.Primary Responsibilities:
- Serve as chief engineer for complex projects spanning the fields of R&D, applied research, prototyping, and demonstration, with focus on Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5-7.
- Help develop strategies for pushing mature technologies (TRL 8-9) out to other Sectors.
- Provide engineering expertise and guidance across several ongoing, high priority maritime projects and proposals.
- Work with internal Project Managers to guide multidisciplinary engineering teams at both the system and subsystem level.
- Help formulate the strategy and engineering execution for proposed Internal Research and Development (IRAD) projects, both inside and outside (as requested) of the LInC.
- Help promote a culture of innovation within the LInC.
- Work with the Office of Technology to identify opportunities to tailor corporate AI/ML offerings and other technologies to division programs.
- Develop strategies for growth into robotics and space systems, using our adjacent GN&C and Autonomy past performance and potential outside partnerships.
- For proposals up to $10M, lead the formulation of innovative engineering solutions, guide technical readiness, and provide key technical proposal authorship.
- For proposals larger than $10M, provide the same level of support as part of a larger team, with assistance from senior capture managers and other solution architects.
- Build relationships with counterparts in other Leidos sectors to propose and deliver compelling, differentiated system solutions that make best use of LInC capabilities.
- Demonstrate proactive leadership skills to respond to business needs for assigned projects.
- Develop and review engineering CDRLs and other program team products such as analyses, technical data packages, software code, and reports.
- Exhibit engineering leadership by mentoring up-and-coming technical leads.
- Lead the solutioning for difficult, multidimensional engineering problems.
- Develop new opportunities with customers to expand our branch's portfolio through trade shows, conference presentations, and other networking events.
- Brief Technical Readiness Review packages and other content to Leidos senior management.
- Routinely lead or participate in customer briefings, either on contract or as part of a capture effort.
- Act as reviewer for a variety of proposals across the broader Applied Science Division, from an engineering SME and risk reviewer perspective.
Basic Qualifications
- Masters Degree or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent.
- A minimum of 15 years relevant experience (or PhD + 13 years), with at least 5 years in an engineering leadership role.
- Experience as lead engineer on a developmental project with responsibility for delivery of a complex product.
- Fluent in industry best practices in algorithm development, embedded software, and test program execution.
- Experience developing system and subsystem engineering solutions against a series of stated requirements.
- Working knowledge of common software development languages.
- Strong communication skills, including both written and oral.
- Experience working developmental program proposals.
- Ability to obtain a DoD SECRET clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with a geographically distributed organization.
- Prior management experience leading a team as a program manager, principle investigator, or line manager.
- Management experience providing technical direction to subcontractors.
