An opportunity for a Mechanical Tooling Design Engineer to join our mechanical engineering team based at Wickford.
Job Title: Mechanical Tooling Design Engineer
Job Summary: As a Mechanical Tooling Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and development of tools, fixtures, and equipment used in the manufacturing process. You will work closely with Wickford in-house engineers and the wider Leidos cross-functional teams to ensure that the tools and equipment are designed to meet quality, efficiency, and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Tooling Design: Collaborate and innovate to create detailed tooling designs, including fixtures, jigs, clamps, and other specialized equipment required for manufacturing processes.
CAD Modelling: Utilize computer-aided design (CAD) software to create 2D and 3D models of tooling and mechanical components. Ensure that designs are accurate and conform to specifications.
Analysis and Testing: Perform structural and functional analysis to assess the integrity and performance of the tooling designs. Conduct tests and simulations to identify potential issues and make necessary adjustments.
Material Selection: Assist in selecting appropriate materials for tooling components, considering factors such as strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness.
Cost Estimation: Participate in cost estimation for tooling projects, helping to keep projects within budget constraints.
Documentation: Maintain detailed records of design specifications, changes, and project progress. Create comprehensive technical documentation, including drawings, schematics, and design reports.
Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, quality assurance, and production teams, to understand their requirements and provide technical support.
Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the continuous improvement of mechanical designs, seeking opportunities to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality.
Safety and Compliance: Ensure that tooling designs meet safety standards and regulatory requirements. Collaborate with relevant authorities to obtain necessary certifications.
Problem Solving: Identify and address design issues and troubleshoot problems that may arise during the manufacturing process.
