We are seeking a dynamic, experienced leader to head up our North American Legal operations and support. This position is part of Heidelberg Materials’ global legal and compliance function and is specifically responsible for legal and compliance leadership of Heidelberg Materials’ North American (“NAM”) operations. The NAM General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer (“GC & CCO”) reports to the NAM President & CEO, with a dotted reporting line to Heidelberg Materials AG’s General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer based in Heidelberg, Germany. This position is based in the Dallas, Texas area at the Heidlberg Materials Corporate office based in Irving.
What you’ll get to do
- Serve as a member of NAM’s Executive Committee;
- Provide practical, clear legal guidance to NAM business leaders on strategic projects as well as the myriad of legal matters that arise from day to day (contracts, employment, OSHA/MSHA compliance, commercial dispute resolution, litigation, subpoena responses, real estate, corporate governance and subsidiary management, data privacy, ESG initiatives and governmental inquires, etc.);
- Oversee the implementation (and continuous enhancement) of Heidelberg Materials’ Compliance Program across NAM, with a particular emphasis on Antitrust Compliance and Human Rights;
- Work closely with Heidelberg Materials' Group Legal & Compliance team as well as Heidelberg Materials' in-house attorneys in other countries and support and implement the company's global legal & compliance strategy in NAM;
- Support Heidelberg Materials' growth strategy in North America from a legal perspective;
- Serve as a motivating and dedicated manager to NAM’s in-house attorneys and legal operations personnel, ensuring that efficient, high quality legal services are provided across all NAM businesses by an engaged, optimally organized legal department;
- Careful supervision of outside counsel spend;
- Timely updates and reports on significant matters to NAM’s CEO and CFO and Heidelberg Materials AG’s GC & COO;
- Partner with finance and accounting, providing timely case updates to ensure appropriate accounting provisions are recorded for contingent liabilities;
- Manage the NAM legal departments’ administrative duties, including department budgeting, legal bill review and approval, and internal control policies (contracts policy, schedule of delegated authority, records retention policy, etc.);
- Collaborate with Heidelberg Materials’ legal personnel outside of NAM on best practices, industry updates, and special projects;
- Continuous assessment of department resources and processes, incorporating tech solutions and automating tasks to allow the legal department to focus on high-value activities. Coordinate, align, and partner with BL leaders to drive area and local improvements.
Essential Experience and Skills
- Several years of experience in a responsible legal function, be it within or outside Heidelberg Materials, ideally in an international environment.
- Even if specific industry experience is not decisive, it is an advantage if the candidate has previous experience in the building materials industry or a related industry.
- Lawyer admitted to the bar in a US State or qualified in another jurisdiction.
