Backus Hospital
For more than 125 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. Backus is home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and is the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. Advanced Practitioner Role ScopeWe are seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to help expand our Observation medicine position shared between the ED and Hospitalist services. This advanced practitioner will be dedicated to the management of ED Observation patients in Behavioral Health and Case Management with anticipated stays of 24-36 hours, as well hospitalist patients requiring observation level care anticipated to be a short stay with focused diagnosis criteria.
The Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) will be an integral member of the care delivery team, including ED and Hospitalist Physicians and APP providers, nurses, PT, OT, Imaging, cardiology, neurology, psychiatry, case management and utilization review. The APP will be the lead provider ensuring the appropriate patient care, documentation, and movement of the OBS patients, with transition to home, skilled facilities, or inpatient medical and behavioral health units. The APP with work with hospitalist, ED, cardiology, radiology, psychiatry, and neurology providers to obtain and interpret stress tests, echocardiograms, CT and MR imaging, review and interpret laboratory studies, PT and OT evaluations. The provider will work closely with the patients, caregivers and families, as well as case management and utilization review to determine the best care options for observation patients.

Schedule: Shared staffing with other APPs to provide coverage Monday thru Saturday 7a-7p. This provider will average 3 12 hour 7a-7p day shifts per week (36 hours). Provider should anticipate working alternating Saturdays on average.

Qualifications
Advanced Practitioner Requirements
·Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner Master’s program preferred
·Licensed, or eligible to be licensed, as a Physician Assistant / Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the state of Connecticut
·Certification or eligible to be certified as a Physician Assistant or Acute Care Board Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered
·Preferably two years of experience as hospitalist and/or previous extensive experience as Nurse or PA in an inpatient or ED setting
·Strong clinical acumen and communication skills with other providers, ancillary staff, patients and families. The ability to adapt quickly, embrace a culture of change and evolution to help develop best practices in this evolving position.
·Intellectual maturity and team focus working with a number of different team members..
