Overview:
Credit Review (CR) is a key department within First Citizens Bank’s (FCB’s) third line of defense (TLOD). Its mission is to provide executive management and the Board of Directors with an independent view of asset quality and credit risk management practices effectiveness across business units and support functions that originate or manage credit exposure. The team is comprised of risk management professionals with deep credit analysis, product knowledge, and transaction skills and experiences across various asset classes, industries, and stages of the client lifecycle.
A critical enabling group within CR is its Strategy, Operations, Analytics, and Reporting (SOAR) team. SOAR enables CR’s success by delivering centralized support across the core competencies of methodology, policy, and process; operations, planning, and budgeting; executive and Board reporting; workforce management; data analytics, technology strategy, and tool management; strategic initiatives and project management; external stakeholder relations; and internal quality assurance.
Job Summary:
The SOAR Director position is a key player-coach role as the leader of CR’s SOAR team, providing the incumbent with an outsized influence on helping CR operate cohesively, efficiently, and effectively across our platform. Akin to a chief operating or administrative officer, the SOAR Director is at the center of all CR’s core processes, continuously enhancing their design, managing their operating effectiveness, and delivering data, analytics, methodology and operational support to CR’s execution teams. The SOAR Director is a key advisor and enabler to FCB’s Head of Credit Review (HCR) and to the department at-large, providing the incumbent significant opportunity to influence CR’s direction, drive change, execute its mission, and interact with stakeholders from across and beyond the Bank. The SOAR Director reports to HCR and is a member of HCR’s leadership team.
Responsibilities:
- Own, manage, and maintain CR’s policies, standards, procedures, and user templates; CR’s Sharepoint, MS Teams channels, and document repositories; and workflow tools and related technology applications.
- Lead the enhancement and support ongoing execution of critical department operational processes such as annual planning, resource capacity and deployment analysis, staff skills assessments, financial budgeting, issue tracking, executive management and Board reporting, and interactions with supervisory agencies and external auditors.
- Lead the design, implementation, and adoption of CR’s internally generated data and related analytics, reporting, and workflow technology tools, including both standardized and customized data visualization and reporting capabilities summarizing portfolio asset quality and CR operational information for CR examiners, management, and other stakeholders.
- Lead CR’s skills assessment, talent development, and training initiatives.
- Actively contribute to department strategy, decision-making and oversight; lead the enhancement and execution of CR’s day-to-day management routines such as plan tracking, staff scheduling, and maintenance of supporting workflow tools.
- Support CR’s interactions with other internal support functions – e.g., Regulatory Relations; Finance; Enterprise Risk Management; Procurement; Technology; Internal Audit – as well as with supervisory agencies and external auditors.
- Define, lead, and manage strategic initiatives and special projects as needed in support of achieving CR’s objectives.
- Develop collaborative relationships with Bank stakeholders; foster a positive work environment consistent with FCB’s values.
- Oversee and manage a team of 4-5 associates aligned to CR’s SOAR team.
The base pay for this position is relative to your experience but the range is generally $130,063 to $225,442 per year. This position is eligible for variable compensation, which may be in the form of incentive, bonus, or commission pay. Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree and 10 years of experience in Commercial credit administration OR High School Diploma or GED and 14 years of experience in Commercial credit administration
- BA or BS degree; MBA or other advanced degree or certification is a plus.
- 10+ years of banking, financial services, consulting, or equivalent experience, including significant project, people, and/or operations management experience. Some credit risk management experience at a large financial institution is preferred.
- Strong organizational, operational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to analyze situations quickly, multi-task and manage deadlines, work cross-functionally to build consensus, and develop and implement sustainable solutions.
- Strong process, control, and documentation focus with experience driving change to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. Experience redesigning or transforming methodologies, processes, and procedures to enhance value or reduce defects.
- Experience leading data analytics, reporting and technology-related initiatives. Familiarity with one or more data management technologies and visualization applications such as Oracle PL/SQL, Business Objects, Power BI and/or Tableau. Experience using data to create KPIs to drive insights into credit portfolio trends and/or internal operational performance.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with an ability to synthesize complex messages for an executive audience. Experience preparing materials for and interacting with supervisory agencies, external auditors, and executives.
- A high degree of professional maturity and emotional intelligence appropriate for interactions with external and internal constituents of all levels. A natural collaborator and culture carrier who can lead effectively amidst ambiguity.
- Strategic thinker yet strong attention to detail with a dedication to quality and operational excellence. Enthusiasm for learning and eagerness to remain current on Bank, market, and industry developments to keep skills current and sharp.
- 5+ years of experience leading geographically dispersed teams and developing talent.
- Willingness to travel 0-10% if needed.
