The Opportunity
This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL or Willis Tower location in the GENC General Counsel division.
The intellectual property litigator will be responsible for an exciting variety of complex intellectual property litigation matters both inside and outside of the U.S. including, patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyrights, both in courts and administrative proceedings.
They will possess a demonstrated expertise in intellectual property litigation, including trial, motion practice, courtroom, deposition, arbitration/mediation, pleadings, legal research, and developing litigation strategy experience. Experience in European litigation is desirable, but not required.
What You’ll Work On
- Developing successful strategies for complex IP litigation and administrative proceedings, including creative approaches to dispute resolution;
- With minimal supervision, selecting, supervising and directing outside counsel, including developing and maintaining case budgets; and
- Advising business leaders [senior roles: at highest levels of management] on legal issues, litigation strategy and dispute resolution, and collaborate with leaders to drive desired outcomes most beneficial to the business.

- Influencing Skills: Build strong relationships with business partners to tactfully influence and gain their support to drive desired outcomes. Represent Abbott externally to [customers, suppliers, competitors, trade associations or government agencies]; and [resolve legal issues using negotiation skills and legal expertise/engage in external influencing efforts].
- This role may directly manage an administrative assistant, paralegal or a Counsel-level attorney, and will assist in supervising and training support staff Travel: Should be prepared to periodically travel. This role can be based in either Abbott Park Illinois or downtown Chicago Illinois.
Required Qualifications
- Possess a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, demonstrate a strong academic background, admitted to a US state bar in good standing and have, or be able to obtain, appropriate licensure to practice law in Illinois.
- Possess at least a bachelor’s degree in engineering or hard science (e.g., chemistry, biology, biochemistry).
- Experience practicing IP Litigation in a prominent law firm or a large corporation.
- Ability to handle multiple projects in fast-paced environment and exercise sound commercial and legal judgment.
- Ability to independently handle highly complex matters with minimal supervision, and understand which issues to elevate to senior management and appropriate timing for doing so.
- In addition to top-notch legal skills and a strong ethical center, excellent interpersonal, strategic thinking, communication and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Admission to practice before the USPTO and advanced degrees in hard science are preferred.

The base pay for this position is $143,300.00 – $286,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
