The position of Engineer Associate II is a combined role of technical engineering with additional lab ownership responsibilities within our Infectious Disease business unit located at Abbott San Diego in San Diego, California. This role will support new product development within our Infectious Disease business as well as support various engineering activities and lab management.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Build, assemble, test and troubleshoot various levels of components, sub-systems and electro-mechanical test fixtures.
- Support prototyping of components including 3D printing, laser cutting and basic machining as well as basic assembly knowledge.
- Optimize testing of subsystems e.g. consumable: buffer mixing, amplification/detection mixing, detection splitting, buffer pack optimizations etc
- Support the assay integration, consumable and detection system workstreams on testing
- Support instrument team to place the Purchase Order request for material, equipment, maintaining inventory etc.
- Contribute inputs on a diverse cross functional/cross site team and external contract manufacturers and engineers.
- Demonstrates commitment to the development, implementation and effectiveness of Abbott Quality Management System per ISO, FDA, and other regulatory agencies.
- Understands and is aware of the quality consequences which may occur from the improper performance of their specific job; has awareness of device defects that may occur in their area of responsibility, including product design, verification and validation, manufacturing and testing activities
- Responsible for exhibiting professional behavior with both internal/external business associates that reflects positively on the company and is consistent with the company’s policies and practices; build productive internal/external working relationships
- Works primarily in a standard office environment with air conditioning, good lighting with a low to moderate noise level. May also visit and work in research labs, testing labs, production and other areas as well as vendor facilities as necessary.
- May, on occasion, work with a variety of production equipment, small hand tools, test equipment, and precision measuring instruments. Also uses standard office equipment such as telephone, fax/copier, and a personal computer with standard office software.
- Carries out duties in compliance with established business policies
- Other duties as assigned, according to the changing needs of the business
- Managing stress in stressful situations as appropriate
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS | EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- BS in Engineering, MS preferred; or equivalent experience/combined education
- Conducts measurements specified in test plans, documents and tabulates results, and provides engineering test reports as required.
- Experience in electronics design for test, manufacturing and assembly with an understanding of design impact on EMC, ESD and Immunity.
- Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner. Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail.
- Basic understanding of both mechanical and electrical systems and sub-systems.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3+ years of experience in medical device
- Excellent understanding of electrical and mechanical designs and components, and their interactions as a system to meet system performance requirements.
- Ability to design and build custom wire harness assemblies for use in various test fixtures.
- Skills in programming tools such as Arduino and LabView to support experiments and implementation.
- Experience with supervising a lab to ensure procedures are followed, cleanliness standards are applied and lab activities are in compliance with quality procedures.

The base pay for this position is $59,800.00 – $119,600.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
